Utah Set to Legalize…

There are impaired drivers on Utah’s roadways and a new bill just passed Committee to pave the way for a safer commute.  Yes, HB371 has been sent to the House for open deliberation.  Utah could be the first state to legalize fully autonomous vehicles.

I am excited for the future.  Text to your heart’s content! Use both hands to eat that burrito or put on makeup!  You think you can squeeze into that spot, the car knows it is 2 feet too small.  These cars may save your life and not just because they are better drivers; they put you at lower risk of road rage attacks because they know that the left lane is for passing.

The self driving vehicle has many opponents, but for once, the government is going to get out of the way and let our thriving tech companies figure it out.  Today it is snowy, and some will say, “how will the computers see if there are no lines on the road or their cameras are covered with snow.”  Well, unlike the human drivers I saw off on the side of the road, perhaps the vehicle will have the brains to stay home?  Maybe Alexa even orders snow tires and your car drives itself to the install.  Technology isn’t lazy.  Maybe one day the cars and robots will take over the world, but until then, I’m going to take a nap while technology takes me to work.
